Transformational Nutrition: Personalized Nutrition (Part 4)
We are chugging right along!
Now that you have a firm grasp on the fundamental components of Transformational Nutrition: science, psychology, and spirituality, let’s look at the missing (and final) link — personalized nutrition!
If you didn’t get a chance to read about the Science of Nutrition, Psychology of Nutrition, and Spirituality of Nutrition head back to those blogs and read them right now!
We’ll be happy to wait! (Be sure to come right back, so that you can understand why personalized nutrition is what holds this model together.)
TRANSFORMATIONAL NUTRITION: PERSONALIZED NUTRITION (PART 4)
Let’s dive into personalized nutrition and why it’s the part of the Transformational Nutrition Method that holds all the other pieces together!
Personalized nutrition is at the center of the model because it exerts the most control over psychological, physical, and spiritual health.
Here is the best part about personalized nutrition — it is something that your clients can control!
Let’s all take a moment to celebrate that your clients no longer have to be passive patients — something most of them have been treated like for the majority of their lives! (Woohoo! That’s what transforming healthcare looks like, friends!)
Nutrition has a bidirectional relationship with the mind, body, and spirit.
For instance, just as a person with depression may struggle to find the motivation to eat healthily, a person who doesn’t eat healthy foods may battle with depression.
This is the vicious cycle of disease.
CREATING THE FOUNDATION FOR MENTAL, PHYSICAL, & SPIRITUAL HEALTH
The exciting news is that you and your clients (yay for co-creating!) can just as easily create a virtuous cycle of health, beginning with a personalized nutrition plan!
Following these three steps to create a personalized approach is the foundation of mental, physical, and spiritual health:
- Ask the right questions.
- Interpret the answers.
- Create a customized plan.
You will likely have to cycle through this process many times before you have a complete plan that will lead to success, but it is so worth it! As this approach will get your clients lasting results — finally!
DISCOVERING OPTIMAL WELLNESS
Your clients need to know that physical nutrition is only where this process begins; it is necessary, but not sufficient to achieve optimal health or wellness.
Chronic stress and other lifestyle and psychological factors determine how well the body is able to absorb nutrients.
In fact, recent studies are pointing to the possibility that the digestive system of a relaxed person who eats junk food may be just as healthy as the digestive system of a stressed person who eats nutrient-dense foods. (Mind-blowing, right?)
One study revealed that if a person is stressed when he or she eats healthy sources of fat (i.e., medium-chain triglycerides like coconut oil), the fat will have similar negative bodily effects as unhealthy fats (i.e., trans fat and saturated fat).
The Transformational Nutrition Model is both revolutionary and powerful because it reveals the missing link of health — nutrition — and recognizes the interconnectedness of nutrition with the mind, body, and spirit.
THE PURPOSE & GOALS OF THE TRANSFORMATIONAL NUTRITION MODEL
The explicit purpose of the Transformational Nutrition Model is to “provide an interconnected system to show how the science of nutrition, psychology, and spirituality blend together along with the physical, social, environmental, and behavioral components to create a model of personalized nutrition that allows an individual to heal and create permanent change.”
Take a deep breath, and let’s break this down for you so that you can easily understand the purpose of the Transformational Nutrition Model!
“Provide an interconnected system:”
Each of the three components of the model — psychology, science, and spirituality — form an interconnected web that recognizes the complexity of health and disease. (Pretty cool, huh?)
“To show how the science of nutrition, psychology, and spirituality blend together along with the physical, social, environmental, and behavioral components:”
In the West, physical science is considered a “hard” science, often understood as a more legitimate science than the science of psychology, nutrition, and spirituality.
But this is simply untrue. The West has wrongly separated the mind, body, and spirit. The “hard” science of medicine is incomplete without these other dimensions. (Think about where this approach has gotten us.)
“To create a model of personalized nutrition:”
There is not a one-size-fits-all when it comes to diet. What works for one person may make someone else sick.
A personalized nutrition plan considers ancestry, genetics, gastrointestinal health, food sensitivities/allergies/intolerances, and personal goals. (Ah! This feels so much better, doesn’t it?)
“That allows an individual to heal and create permanent change:”
Unlike synthetic pharmaceuticals, lifestyle changes can create sustainable, deep, changes at the cellular level.
A pill may temporarily mask symptoms, but targeted, personalized lifestyle changes can rewire the nervous system, empower mitochondria, and refurbish a leaky intestinal lining. That is what true healing looks like! (This is your cue to break into a song and dance! #celebrate)
