What Does Success Look Like to You?
When you hear the word “success,” there are probably certain things that come to mind.
Like… an unlimited income, fulfillment, satisfaction, and most of all, the ability to live life on your own terms, where you finally feel alive.
Who doesn’t want that? (Especially that “feeling alive” part!)
There are plenty of people out there who truly feel they are “successful.” And that’s just awesome.
But then… there are people who DREAM about success, thinking one day “that could be me.”
They’re usually torn between staying in their comfort zone and taking a leap of faith into the wild, adventurous unknown where their lives could change forever.
They want success, but they aren’t quite sure how to get there.
They’re afraid of what people will think if they “fail.”
Maybe you’ve felt that way, too?
What Does Success Look Like to You?
Here’s the thing… Success isn’t one-size-fits-all. #sayitagain
We all have different ideas as to what “success” means or looks like.
When I first started coaching, my idea of “success” was helping people not have to suffer anymore.
My idea of “success” was doing something that mattered in the world. Something that left me fulfilled.
At ITN, we believe your vision doesn’t have to fit into some cookie-cutter mold.
(We believe a LOT of things shouldn’t fit into cookie-cutter molds, but that’s another conversation for another time.)
Maybe success is being a coach who works one-on-one with a few clients.
Or maybe it looks like sharing your message on a bigger platform, hosting webinars and workshops.
Success may even mean writing a book, or hosting a podcast, or… doing whatever it is that makes you come alive.
If YOU Don’t Define What Success Means, Someone Else Will Define It For You
And you will chase that idea of success until you’re exhausted, unhappy, probably unhealthy, and without any direction on what to do next – except keep working.
There Are Many Definitions of Success
- favorable or desired outcome
- the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence
“What is success? It is being able to go to bed each night with your soul at peace.” – Paulo Coelho
“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” – Maya Angelou
“Success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” – Winston Churchill
Rules for Defining Your Version of Success
- You must think only about yourself and what you want for your life.
- Let go of “should”.
- Let your wishes soar without concern for what others think.
- Do not apologize for what you want.
Where Do You Start?
Start with your values.
Your personal values are your standards of ethics and behavior. They set the boundaries by which you live your life and are the overarching system for how you define success.
Focus on what YOU really value. Not what you think you SHOULD value.
Once you’ve identified this, list what you don’t want in your life and what you do want in your life.
Use these questions to get started:
- What makes you feel most alive?
- What gives you the greatest sense of fulfillment and meaning?
- What is non-negotiable for you?
- What do you want your life to stand for?
- What do you care deeply about?
- If you could put one idea or message on a billboard for the world to see, what would it be?
- If you left your body tomorrow, what would you regret?
So, How Do YOU Define Success?
… doing your best
… setting concrete goals
… never having to worry about money again
… loving what you do
… feeling fulfilled
… being engaged and on purpose
… caring for yourself, unapologetically
… helping others
The key here is what “YOU” want. Not someone else. When you define your passions and your desires AND why they’re important to you, you’re setting yourself up for success.
You must be intentional about what you want to create in your life and what success looks like to you.
And… you must not apologize for it.
Stop dreaming about your version of success and make 2021 the year you actually have it.
Life is too short to keep moving through it feeling unfulfilled and living someone else’s dream.
